Our theme this year is "Reaching for tomorrow." Going back to the 1950’s, Walkerton has been one of the places to be over the 4th of July weekend. This year is no exception and it all gets started with the parade. It will begin at the Urey Middle School and ends at the John Glenn High School. The culmination of the festivities will be the fireworks celebration at dusk.

This Jenny Fry photo shows onlookers waiting for the Walkerton Fireworks to begin at the John Glenn High School field in 2018.

Marching through downtown Walkerton to celebrate Independence Day.

Walkerton 4th of July Parade events from the 1970's always provided plenty of crowds. People came from all over the tri-county area to enjoy the marchers and colorful floats. Once the celebration included carnivals on Illinois St. and even bigger festivities at Place Park on the west side of town.

Don't forget the patriotic Koontz Lake Independence Day floatilla happening.

Walkerton Independence Day celebrations from the past include memories like from this 1969 photo of the Dixie Walkers who square danced on their float for Walkerton onlookers. The parade has long been a local tradition.

The "13th Annual Freedom Fest" scheduled for the "Hesters Farm" from July 4th through the 7th. The usual peace and quiet of the 1832 farm since, the original LeBlanque Family is held by Annette Hesters. She has run the "castle" museum and log cabin for over 25 years. It is located 1/4 mile south of Walkerton at 71880 SR 23. You cannot miss the "Hesters Log Cabin" sign She encourages tours of the historic museum depicting life since 1832 in the Walkerton area. You can take part in family history, Indian life, the castle, farm, and the log home.

The Hesters Farm Freedom Festival is a living history museum celebrating the 4th of July. Tours are available and always ready for special events. They have plenty of banquet space. The celebration runs through July 7th.

This is probably Walkerton's only castle available for banquets. Built in the 19th century by the LaBlanque family. Fascinating history and museum.
