Holy Scoops Ice Cream To Open Soon On Illinois Street In Downtown Walkerton
Bob and Paula Hill love small town life and the familiar faces of friends and neighbors. One of their favorite things about downtown Walkerton is the people who patronize there. Paula has always been inspired by her Grandma Jan who expressed her fondness for ice cream parlors. Paula hopes the new Holy Scoops Ice Cream located at 408 Illinois St. will be all that Grandma Jan Hill imagined it could be?
The new Holy Scoops Ice Cream Shop will open soon at 408 Illinois St. in the historic commercial district at downtown Walkerton. The property was originally built as a photo studio in the mid 19th century for train travelers visiting the area.
Paula says, "We will try to keep things simple."
"We will offer single and double scoops of hand dipped ice cream, sundaes, shakes, malts, and banana splits."
"Our original plan is to have soft serve ice cream along with the hand dipped. It has proved quite challenging thus far."
"So, we will likely not have soft serve upon opening. But we haven't given up on it yet."
Paula, and Bill Hill became interested in the location after the previous business owner of the old, historic, barber shop mentioned to Bob that he was moving to a larger building. According to Paula that gave Bob the idea to buy the 19th century building and turn it into an ice cream stand. The property was built originally, for train travelers to have their photograph taken upon visiting the old Illinois St. train station.
According to the Hill's it is 13'x16' and is the smallest deeded property in St Joseph County. The Hill's spoke with Chuck Sherland, a former owner, who told us that he saw a picture from the 1890's of this building and the old Florence Hotel next door.
Customers at Holy Scoops Ice Cream will order from a window along the sidewalk on Illinois St. since the unique historic space has a small footprint.
Paula said, "We aren't sure how old the building is at this point."
The Holy Scoops founders are proud of their family legacy in the area. The Hill family has had property at Koontz Lake since 1921. Bob grew up in Walkerton and is a 1991 graduate of John Glenn.
Both Bob and Paula work full time for Master Roll Mfg. in LaPorte, and will continue to do so.
Holy Scoops Ice Cream will have many Hershey's Ice Cream flavors at the Illinois St. shop in downtown Walkerton.
Jan Hill, Bob's mother, will manage Holy Scoops day to day operations. It is a tight, irregular footprint to serve up ice cream inside. So, customers will be served at a walk up window along the Illinois St. sidewalk. Be sure to check out the Ice Cream Cakes available for order from the Hershey's supplier.
