Top 10 Walkerton Moments Of 2021
Out with the old and in for the new. It is that time of year again to review our past and look forward to a better future coming 2022. Here are the news stories that made 2021 stand out:
10. New Restauarant!
Bourbon Street Pizza Officially Opens On Roosevelt Rd. - Entrepreneur Tim Harmon opened the new "Bourbon Street Pizza" in the old controversial "Memories Pizza" address between November and January of 2021. Harmon hired many local employees to fill the positions at the dine-in restaurant at the newly remodeled 608 Roosevelt Rd location. Bourbon St. Pizza has a wide selection of gourmet meat, veggie, and gluten-free pizzas. You can even design your own with up to 2 free toppings!
The Pandemic COVID virus created a glut in labor throughout the Walkerton area! Employers were forced to close their businesses because of not enough people were answering job hiring positions!
At 3:18 PM EST on June 17, 2021, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred near the Indiana-Illinois border, 1.9 miles west of Bloomingdale, Indiana. Residents in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio reported shaking from the earthquake. Many noted lawn chairs falling down. Heehee!
7. The community job fair of 2021 happened at the Walkerton Lincoln TownshipPublic Library.
It was a chance to meet hiring managers at top local employers like: Adaptive Nursing and Home Care, American Roller, Bourbon Street Pizza, Casey’s General Store, Country Roads Restaurant , CVS, Dollar General FreshRight, Elwood Staffing, First Source Bank, Foegley Landscaping, HYDRO, JGHS School Corporation, LEER, Lippert Components, Master Roll Mfg, Miller’s Merry Manor-Walkerton, North American Senior Benefits, and Ultra Manufacturing.
6. Falloween returned at John Glenn High School.
During the week of September 24th the Falloween event at the High School parking lots and parade was a huge success in fundraising. The sponsorship by "Diamond Donors" Teachers Credit Union, Polygon Corporation, and R & B Car Corporation with the spirit of the student body and staff at the John Glenn School Corporation was exciting!
Casey's fire closes Walkerton's only gas station on the westside! The town once home to 7 gas stations was overwhelmed when a fire at Casey's put the business out unable to provide. Presently new construction will enable the popular location to reopen. The Citgo at the center of town is only one open.
4. New Place For Gas!
The Chaddheur BP (British Petroleum) location once the old Doll Texaco Station took up the challenges to rebuild the site to reopen soon. Another fire setback plans but Mr. Chaddheur continues to work on getting it open for the Walkerton area consumers. Gas has been a national issue lately. Getting this place reopen will bring more gas opportunities for residents and travelers!
3. The Chicken Ordinance!
Town Attorney Fred Jones presented a draft of an ordinance to allow citizens to house chickens in the town limits. There was a lengthy discussion about the details of allowing chickens in the town limits. Town Council President Gene Reese requested the number of chickens on less than one acre be lowered to four as opposed to six. Town Attorney Fred Jones will bring a revised ordinance for consideration to the next meeting.
The Walkerton BMV closed after more than 80 years providing service to the Walkerton area! The new branch located at 302 Roosevelt Rd. now sits empty.
1. Shop Local!
Walkerton Pop-Up Shop / Small Christmas Shopping Spree / Bazaar was a huge success located at 611 Roosevelt Rd. The vendors provided local crafts and products for Walkerton DT shoppers.
