Hoosier Shrimp Farm Provides Food To The Midwest

Jason and Kristen Troike were living outside of Indianapolis, and wanted to move to northern Indiana to be close to family, and to raise their son in the country.  One of their goals was to join the Troike family business of farming. Jason's parents, Ed and Debbie Troike, are grain farmers in Hamlet, IN, as was his grandfather, Warren Burch.

 

Unfortunately, Jason has horrible allergies and could not become a grain farmer like his father and grandfather. On top of that Jason was diagnosed with a chronic vision impairment, so they needed to find something where Kristen could manage the daily operations.

 

The Troikes discovered shrimp farming, and felt it was a perfect fit for them. After several tours, classes, and a business proposal later, Hoosier Shrimp Farm LLC was born.

 

The next step was finding a location for the farm and their home. The Troikes spent months looking for property in the Hamlet area. Finally, in the winter of 2013 a beautiful 95-acre farm in Walkerton became available, and the Troikes didn't hesitate.

 

We started with our first 2 tanks of shrimp on September 15th, 2014 and opened our doors for retail sales by the end of January 2015.

 

 

We chose the Walkerton location after purchasing a 95-acre hobby farmstead.

 

We currently have 16 tanks that hold 5000 gallons of water each, these tanks hold about 6000-7000 shrimp. The water is run through several filters to take out unwanted bacteria, algae, and viruses. We only add water, salt, baking soda, growth bacteria, and lime to the tanks; we never add any hormones, chemicals, or antibiotics. This makes the shrimp an eco-friendly (green) product.


We are one of 19, indoor recirculating saltwater systems in the U.S., and one of 11 in Indiana.

 

We started with our first 2 tanks of shrimp on September 15th, 2014 and opened our doors for retail sales by the end of January 2015.

 

 

 

We're open to the public on Fridays, 2pm - 6pm CST, and Saturdays, 1pm - 4pm CST. Shrimp can also be purchased through appointment, by calling 317-331-4027. Our shrimp is also being sold to farm-to-table restaurants.

 

We will also be selling small quantities of fresh produce and berries from our farm. We welcome you to come out and see how we are raising shrimp in northern Indiana!

 

 

We're raising Pacific White Shrimp, in-doors, using 16 saltwater tanks, which hold bewteen 6000-7000 shrimp in each tank.


We purchase PL (Post Larval) shrimp, which are approximately 60 days old. We're raising them for 3-5 months, and growing them to various count-per-pound sizes.

Here is some advice for storing Fresh Shrimp: 

  • Fresh shrimp that have not been cooked are very perishable.

  • Shrimp should be used within 2 days of purchase for optimal taste.

  • Store fresh shrimp that will not be cooked immediately on ice in refrigerator, covered with wax paper.

    • The wax paper allows air to circulate around the shrimp.

  • Cooked shrimp in refrigerator should be eaten in 2-3 days.

  • Frozen shrimp, packed tightly, will last 6 months in freezer.

    • Shrimp that is frozen tends to lose texture.

  • Once defrosted, keep refrigerated and use within 3 days.

    • Once defrosted, do not refreeze shrimp.

 

 

Do you know your shrimp?  Shrimp is the most consumed seafood product in the world, and the average American consumes over 4 pounds of shrimp each year. Shrimp are farmed in over 50 countries, with Thailand, China, India,Vietnam, and Denmark are top producers. Over 90% of shrimp consumed in the U.S. is imported; of that only 2% are inspected, and over 60% that are inspected are rejected due to contaminants such as banned chemicals, and pesticides.

 

Besides, selling some of the tastiest, and sweetest shrimp one will ever eat, "Hoosier Shrimp Farm" offers a handful of seasonal produce grown in our gardens.From potatoes, onions, peppers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, and green beans, to a verity of fall squashes and pumpkins.

Looking for something sweet? Seasonal raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries will fill that desire.

 

 

We even added chickens to our farm, and now offer fresh brown eggs. We offer a number of different tours, including a mini 10-minute tour for anyone interested in how shrimp are raised, and a general overview of the process.We also offer school and group tours, to educate larger groups about the process of raising salt water shrimp in Indiana. Groups of 10 or more are $1 per person.
