One, Jennifer Medich has been very busy lately, putting together an extravaganza with some of Walkerton's brightest, most talented people! Straight from Broadway, she is bringing "Clue" to the John Glenn stage! Jennifer has been choreographing and designing at the John Glenn Theater Company for the past 20 years. When Mr. Fansler retired earlier this year she became the new Director.
I asked, Jennifer, how she decided on Clue?
"As a high school director one of the main things you search for in a play is the number of players in the show."
She added, "plays tend to have very small casts and with so many students wanting to be in the show? I tried to look for one that would give lots of students the opportunity to take part."
Jennifer said, "Clue has a very interesting history. It is based on the movie starring; Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Lesley-Anne Warren, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, and Martin Mull in 1985."
"While, it didn't do well at the box office it has a terrific following in pop culture. It next appeared as a stage play and, then, became a musical!"
She went on, "there is even a version where the audience can pick the ending, but, that is not our show."
Clue was inspired by the classic "Hasbro" board game, it is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up.
The show was a murder mystery set in a Gothic Revival mansion, and is styled after the 1976 film "Murder by Death" (which also, featured Clue star, Eileen Brennan) and other various murder/dinner parties of mystery. Jennifer said, doing the John Glenn Theater stage set presents its challenges.
Students and some parents are working on the new set of Clue at the John Glenn Theater on John Glenn Drive. This photo shows how far they are coming on the build.
"The show was written for a stage with fly walls. Those are walls that drop in from ceiling."
"We do not have fly space at John Glenn. So, I designed a set to match the shows needs. The set is being built by the students along with help from several parents." It will be a colorful accomplishment for the audience.
Proudly, Jennifer said, "This cast is great! A lot of veteran talent and some great new talent as well. Many of the main players are seniors with 5 or 6 high school shows to their credit."
Some of the kids in roles include; Luke Lemert as Professor Plum, Kayla Kerchove as Miss Scarlet, and Sam Carson as Wadsworth,
Knowing how many times I played the board game myself, as a kid of the '70's, I asked her what happens? She replied, "Clue takes place on a dark and stormy night at Boddy Manor."
"Six strangers are invited to a dinner party by Mr. Boddy and they have no idea why? After a short dinner there is an unexpected murder and the game is afoot!"
Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, it is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist.
